Legal Internship Opportunities – 2022

The City of Scranton Law Department seeks forward-thinking, public-spirited law students for
two available positions: a Part-Time Legal Internship and a Full-Time Legal Internship.

Part-Time Legal Internship
• Opening: Immediate and/or Summer 2022
• Time Commitment: 4+ hours/week, minimum 4 weeks
• Eligibility: Current law student or recent law school graduate
o Graduate students in public policy or a similar field will also be considered
• Location: Remote
• Duties:
o Research legal questions on a range of municipal powers and activities
o Provide legal and policy assistance on projects aligned with your interests
o Other duties as assigned
• Other: Intern will report to the Solicitor and/or First Assistant Solicitor. The internship is
unpaid; however, the Law Department is committed to providing a fulfilling and
educational internship experience tailored to the intern. Intern will check-in with
supervisors as needed. Supervisors will make themselves available for mentorship,
feedback, and other professional development support, during the internship and
beyond.
• Ideal Candidate:
o Able to research independently across federal, state, and municipal law (with
appropriate guidance)
o Eager to make a difference for the City of Scranton’s residents

Full-Time Legal Internship
• Opening: Summer 2022 (start date is flexible)
• Time Commitment: 35+ hours/week, minimum 10 weeks
• Eligibility: Current law student (rising 2L or 3L) or recent law school graduate
• Location: Remote and/or in person.
• Duties:
o Research legal questions on a wide range of municipal powers and activities
o Provide legal and policy assistance on projects related to affordable housing,
energy efficiency, and infrastructure spending
o Help streamline contracting processes and incorporate new, user-friendly software
o Meet with city officials, outside counsel, and other stakeholders on behalf of the
Law Department
o Support other departments’ efforts in the area of your interest
o Other duties as assigned
• Other: Intern will be provided a City of Scranton email address and, if available, a City
laptop. Intern will report to the Solicitor and/or First Assistant Solicitor. Intern will also
work with other Assistant Solicitors and outside counsel. The internship is unpaid;
however, the Law Department is committed to providing a fulfilling and educational
internship experience tailored to the intern. Intern will meet regularly with supervisors,
will have input on their assignments, and will have the opportunity to interact with the
Mayor, the Business Administrator, the Director of Community Development, and other
city and community leaders. Supervisors will make themselves available for mentorship,
feedback, and other professional development support, during the internship and
beyond.
• Ideal Candidate:
o Public interest work experience (government and/or non-profit)
o Looking for general counsel experience
o Able to research independently across federal, state, and municipal law (with
appropriate guidance)
o Doesn’t accept “that’s the way it’s always been done” as a reason
o Eager to make a difference for the City of Scranton’s residents
