City of Scranton Opens Pre-Apprenticeship Grant Applications Through August 29

August 11, 2025

SCRANTON, PA. – The City of Scranton is announcing a grant opportunity that is available for pre-apprenticeship programs in the building trades and carpentry. Applications are due by Friday, Aug. 29, 2025. Interested groups can apply online through OpenGov at https://bit.ly/ScrantonApprentice2025

“Apprenticeship programs provide the local training, equipment, and materials that can help Scranton residents pursue a career with family-sustaining wages,” said Mayor Paige G. Cognetti. “We are proud to support workforce development programs that strengthen our local trades and small businesses.”

Grants are available to organizations that offer apprenticeship opportunities that can help create employment for those living in Scranton.

Applicants should be registered pre-apprenticeship programs to be eligible. They should provide a comprehensive budget for their funding request, explain the expected outcomes of their program, and discuss how program successes will be evaluated.

Programs may be funded in part or in full based on available funds. All funds must be used by December 31, 2025.

Applications are open now. Interested groups can contact Liza Carroll at lcarroll@scrantonpa.gov with questions.

The City’s pre-apprenticeship grants previously supported initiatives including a Carpenters’ Apprentice Ready Program (CARP) that had previously only been offered in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, expanding the program’s reach and opportunities for workers in Northeast Pennsylvania. Five students graduated from Scranton’s first CARP cohort last November through the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, allowing them the option to join a 20-week state-approved apprenticeship program to be completed over four years.
