Scranton Plans Demolition of Multiple Blighted Properties

August 19, 2025

SCRANTON, PA. – In Mayor Paige G. Cognetti’s ongoing commitment to improving public safety and fostering increased quality of life throughout neighborhoods, the City of Scranton will complete a series of blighted property demolitions throughout the late summer and fall.

“With these demolitions, we are nearing 100 properties taken down during our administration to help increase property values through the city and eliminate dangerous structures,” Mayor Cognetti said. “We will continue the important work of removing blighted homes across all of our neighborhoods.”

Properties included in the first two groups of demolitions released this year, which will be completed using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), are:

  • 231-233 Harrison Avenue
  • 306 Beddoe Court
  • 812 Rear Hampton Street
  • 1848 Clearview Street
  • 524 and 524 Rear Gibbons Street
  • 402 Theodore Street, including a garage
  • 1109 Poplar Street

Brdaric Excavating was awarded demolition contracts for the first two groups of dangerous properties released in 2025 for $61,400 and $89,900, respectively.

In addition, Brdaric will also demolish a long-blighted property at 630 Clay Avenue following a bid for $49,000 earlier this year. That project will be completed using City funds.

While multiple more rounds of property demolitions are still slated to be released this year, one bid is open at this time. The City aims to demolish 110 Marion Avenue using City funds. The property is “in a state of advanced disrepair” including a “compromised rear deck structure and deterioration of the building envelope.” Demolition bids for 110 Marion Avenue will be accepted until 10 a.m. on Thurs., Aug. 21.

The City of Scranton works diligently to balance the rights of individual owners and the government’s responsibility to advance public safety and quality of life priorities when addressing blighted properties.
