Department of Public Works Casual Employee

This is an unskilled labor position requiring heavy repetitive lifting. The duties include heavy and light physical labor, mostly outdoor work in various weather conditions including extreme heat and cold working in groups or alone upon the nature of the assignment.

Typical Example of Work:

• Collects refuse on designated route.
• Dumps Refuse from containers into truck.
• May start packing device on truck.
• Digs trenches with a pick and shovel to repair storm basins and culverts.
• Mix concrete and mortar with a hoe in mud pan, wheelbarrow or mixer.
• Shovels and rakes hot and cold asphalt. Uses tampers and rollers to pack materials.
• Building asphalt or concreate curbs, sidewalks etc.
• Cut grass, weeds, brush using push mowers and weed whackers.   
• Shovels snow from sidewalks on streets and bridges where and when necessary.
• Applies deicing materials manually.
• Lift, carry, push large bulky items.
• Load and unload bulky materials and supplies. 
• Provide labor to assist tree crew with removal and trimming trees.
• Leaf bag pickup and vacuum duties.
• Maintain and clean storm drains.
• Vehicle equipment and facility cleaning. 
• Perform other physical labor related work as assigned.

Work Requirements:

• Doctor’s certificate stating physical fitness to perform these duties.
• Observes all mandatory safety regulations.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Must have a valid Pennsylvania drivers license.
• Ability to operate hand tools and execute standard labor practices.
• Ability to read and write.
• Ability to understand oral directives. 
• Maintain a positive attitude during physically demanding conditions.

A physical is required for the position when hired and before starting.
