SCRANTON, PA. – Scranton Mayor Paige G. Cognetti officially opened the City’s newest unique park feature with a ribbon cutting at the Weston Field skate park, 982 Providence Rd., on Tues., Oct. 28. The skate park was a $956,136.50 investment made entirely possible through Scranton’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
“This investment at Weston Field has already brought so much excitement and energy from our local skateboarding community,” Mayor Cognetti said. “Some of our residents have waited decades for a park like this in Scranton. Thank you to Dino DeNaples and our local skateshop owners from Bazaar Skateshop for keeping this community alive and the designers from Pillar Design Studios and the construction team from Artisan Skateparks for making this dream a reality.”
Ahead of Tuesday’s ribbon cutting, word of the skate park’s completion quickly spread online, generating buzz in Scranton and beyond. It has been a regular attraction for crowds of people riding skateboards, scooters, bicycles, and even roller skates for about two weeks.
Riders of all ages are invited to a celebratory “Break In The Skate Park” skate jam at Weston Field hosted by Bazaar Skateshop, 342 Adams Ave., on Sat., Nov. 1, from noon to 5 p.m. The skate jam will include a best trick and best costume contest.
The Weston Field skate park is a full concrete park featuring quarter pipes, rails, stamped concrete, and much more. The park’s natural stormwater drainage features recall Scranton’s storied history tied to America’s railroad system, with final aesthetic elements to be installed in the coming months.
The skate park completion follows the City’s opening of a new $3.6 million pool complex at Weston Field in June. Overall, Mayor Cognetti has invested over $26 million into the City’s park system, developing accessible recreation features, adding playgrounds and outdoor buildings, and creating all new attractions, making many parks the revitalized centers of the neighborhoods in which they’re located.
