Mayor Cognetti Announces City Hall Open House on October 3

September 25, 2025

SCRANTON, PA. – The City of Scranton will host an open house on Fri., Oct. 3, from 6-8 p.m. to celebrate the recent restoration of the historic building via escorted tours and more.

“With the stained glass now restored in both Council Chambers and the Governor’s Room, we’re proud to showcase City Hall and all the work that went into its preservation,” Mayor Paige G. Cognetti said. “During the open house we want to give residents a chance to meet the staff who provide services to them every day and thank the dedicated teams that made the renovation possible.”

The October 3 open house, held in conjunction with First Friday Scranton, will include light food and refreshments, escorted tours of City Hall, and an opportunity to connect with City staff and to celebrate the talented local professionals that completed the restoration project.

The restoration of Scranton City Hall was a 14-month long process that cost $4.8 million, including $1.5 million in funding from Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) and a portion of Scranton’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The work included the restoration of stained-glass windows throughout the building, replacing slate roof tiles, repointing mortar joints, façade repairs, and more.

Scaffolding surrounded the building from Feb. 5, 2024, to April 22, 2025, but work on the interior of the building remained. Stained glass and carpeting were replaced throughout the summer in meeting areas including Scranton City Council Chambers and the Governor’s Room on the second floor. Crews have also fixed damaged plaster, repainted offices, and finished additional upgrades to ensure safe workspaces for the nearly 80 employees who work in the building daily.

City Hall was constructed in 1888. The last major renovation of the building took place in 1980, and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
