Scranton Mayor Paige G. Cognetti led a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, Mon., Sept. 14, at the recently reopened Grace Street Park, 400 Grace Street, in the City’s Plot section. The project was estimated to cost $433,000, funded by a $396,239 Local Share Account grant and remaining funds from the Capital Reserve Fund.
“We have 32 parks in the city, and we’ve tried to upgrade parks in every neighborhood,” Mayor Cognetti said. “It’s exciting to unveil the project here in the Plot section in Scranton and make a neighborhood park that has different features from all of our other parks. The purple color is new for the city, and we have a great little bike and scooter track that has lots of different routes for the kids to enjoy. We are grateful for the partnership with our state representatives that helped with LSA money and look forward to continuing the work of revitalizing Scranton’s parks.”
Per the City’s 2022 Parks Needs Assessment, Grace Street Park was “nearing the end of its lifespan” with many playground features “deteriorating” at that time. The dogleg-shaped park is one Scranton’s smaller parks, measuring 0.35 acres, and it sits near part of the Lackawanna River levee.
The park’s former beige and green play equipment has been replaced with purple, blue, and yellow slides, climbing features, and other inviting elements set on top of teal-and-black flecked soft rubber play surfaces. A new asphalt walking loop also welcomes walkers and small bicycles.The completion of Grace Street Park continues the Cognetti administration’s commitment to developing and updating Scranton’s robust park system. Since 2021, the administration has invested nearly $26 million into parks, accessible play equipment, and outdoor pools. In 2026, the City opened a $1.18 million multicourt complex at Nay Aug Park as well as Nay Aug’s $4.6 million zero-entry pool, opened the $1.8 million Capouse Avenue Park including a new splash pad, and added a $100,000 mini-pitch to the amenities at Weston Field.
