Mayor Paige Gebhardt Cognetti participated in a virtual meeting this morning with Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen and five other mayors from across the United States to discuss the urgent needs for working families and small businesses and the challenges that cities like Scranton face in order to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Secretary highlighted the merits of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which includes $350 billion for state and local governments to do important work like distributing the vaccine and reopening schools to help cities and their citizens make it to the other side of this pandemic.

Mayor Cognetti expressed the need for opportunities coming out of the next federal stimulus package to be equitable, accessible and amplified across information platforms. She stressed the need for expanded child tax credits, which President Biden’s American Rescue Plan includes.

“It was a true honor to speak with Secretary Yellen this morning. The Secretary understands the difficulties we are facing and she and her team are actively working to craft policies that will help families, businesses and bolster the economic future of cities like Scranton,” said Cognetti.
