Officials from the City of Scranton joined with State Rep. Kyle T. Donahue, District Office Director Thom Welby representing State Rep. Bridget M. Kosierowski, and City Council President Gerald Smurl on Monday, Nov. 25, 2024, to celebrate completed renovations at Billy Barrett Park, 2900 Colliery Ave., Scranton. The $196,180 project was supported by a $100,000 Local Share Account (LSA) – Monroe County grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
“We have heard the requests for pickleball courts and have 13 courts coming to the City of Scranton,” Mayor Paige G. Cognetti said. “We are excited to cut the ribbon today on the first two outdoor pickleball courts in Scranton right here in Minooka.”
Work at Billy Barrett Park focused on resurfacing court areas, completely refurbishing one tennis court and creating Scranton’s first two official outdoor pickleball courts. Pickleball is a fast-paced mixture of tennis and ping pong played using paddles and a wiffleball. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, participation in the sport soared by 223 percent between January 2019 and January 2023.
Scranton’s ongoing park development projects have improved Connors Park, Oakmont Park, North Scranton Mini Park, and Novembrino Park. Projects, including new pool construction and rehabilitation, continue at Connell Park, Nay Aug Park, Robinson Park, Weston Field, and more.
