As severe weather batters the City of Scranton, residents are reminded of ways to check in on neighbors and, later this week, help others “Beat The Heat.”
“Scranton has always been a community where we take care of each other,” Mayor Paige G. Cognetti. “As we all deal with ongoing extreme weather, including storms that can cause power outages or regular heat waves, it’s important to check in on friends and neighbors. Our residents need to know that the City is here to help.”
Citizens who would like to request a wellness check for a neighbor dealing with power outages or extreme heat can call the following non-emergency numbers:
- Lackawanna County Non-Emergency Line: 570.342.9111
In addition to checking in on fellow residents, the City is conducting a “Beat The Heat” donation drive this week to help the unhoused and other members of our population.
On Friday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Weston Field House, 982 Providence Rd., Scranton, teams will be collecting heat-related items to help others. Suggested donations include water, sunscreen, electrolyte packets like Liquid IV or Gatorade powders, and other heat-related items. A Pop-Up City Hall will follow the Beat The Heat drive until 4 p.m.
Donations collected Friday will be shared with social service organizations including the Catherine McAuley Center, Catholic Social Services, the Crisis Intervention Center, Keystone Mission, NEPA Youth Shelter, the Scranton Vet Center of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, United Neighborhood Centers, and the Women’s Resource Center.
