City Council Meeting Recap – October 8, 2024

At its regular meeting on Tues., Oct. 8, 2024, Scranton City Council: 

  1. Introduced a resolution to enter into a contract for $105,262.84with Social Contract, LLC, to perform services for the Community Violence Intervention (CVI) and Prevention Program. The City and its partners, including Lackawanna County and the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office, are committed to a program that intervenes directly with individuals experiencing violence and to provide evidence-based programming to disrupt the cycle of violence. Costs will be shared between the City and the County. The resolution was introduced by a vote of 5-0.
  2. Introduced a resolution to appoint Megan Alpert as a member of the Scranton Housing Authority to fill the unexpired term of Mary Ann Sinclair, beginning immediately and expiring on Sept. 27, 2026. The resolution was introduced by a vote of 5-0.
  3. Advanced an ordinance approving an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Scranton’s Department of Public Works and the Scranton School District regarding the borrowing of a refuse truck. The district is currently without a refuse truck for its daily operations. The resolution was advanced by a vote of 5-0.
  4. Adopted an ordinance approving an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Scranton’s Fire Department and the Borough of Dunmore regarding the borrowing of a spare city fire engine/apparatus. Dunmore will send both of its fire engines/apparatuses for refurbishment, leaving the borough without a fire engine for approximately one year. The City will not be affected in its ability to respond to incidents while this equipment is loaned to Dunmore. The ordinance was adopted by a vote of 5-0.
  5. Adopted a resolution regarding a sewage facilities planning module revision for new land development by BRT Ice, LP, at Providence Road and Olive Street. This is a revision to the original sewage facilities plan at the Ice Box Complex. New development consists of the construction of a two-story, 16,000 square foot office building. The resolution was adopted by a vote of 5-0.
  6. Adopted a resolution regarding a sewage facilities planning module revision for new land development by the University of Scranton in the 300 block of Madison Avenue. The revision will accommodate the construction of the University’s new four-story, 89,000 square foot building, Weiss Hall. The resolution was adopted by a vote of 5-0.
  7. Adopted an ordinance approving the 2025 Capital Budget. The Capital Budget outlines a plan for future spending of a total of $68,814,677 across departments including the Scranton Police Department, Scranton Fire Department, Information Technology, Code Enforcement, buildings and maintenance, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation. The ordinance was adopted by a vote of 5-0.
