Scranton Accepting Applications for CDBG Public Service Grants

The City of Scranton has opened applications for its portion of 2024 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. The total amount of available funds to be awarded this year is $398,020.80. Applications are open until October 20, 2024. Groups can apply online through OpenGov at https://bit.ly/scranton24cdbg

“The City’s public service funding is critical to local organizations that need additional support to provide essential resources here in Scranton,” Scranton Mayor Paige G. Cognetti said.

Scranton’s 2024 HUD allocation of CDBG funding was $2,653,472. Per HUD guidelines, a maximum of 15 percent of Scranton’s CDBG funding must support local public services, including, but not limited to:

  • Employment services and job training
  • Crime prevention and public safety
  • Child care
  • Health services
  • Substance abuse services including counseling and treatment
  • Fair housing counseling
  • Education programs
  • Energy conservation
  • Services for senior citizens
  • Services for homeless persons
  • Welfare services, excluding income payments
  • Recreational services

Funds may be used to pay for labor, supplies, and materials as well as to operate and/or maintain the portion of the facility in which the public service is located. This includes the lease of a facility, equipment, and other property needed for the public service.

Applicants must be a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(23). Programs may be funded in part or in full based on available funds. All funds must be used by December 31, 2026.
