Scranton Grant Application Aims to Improve Fire Station Signal Lights

February 26, 2026

SCRANTON, PA. – Mayor Paige G. Cognetti’s administration intends to apply for a $269,400 Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF) grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to improve safety at City fire stations. Legislation for the grant application is expected to be introduced by Scranton City Council at its meeting on Tues., Feb. 24, 2026.

“This application continues our efforts to improve emergency response times and driver and pedestrian safety,” Mayor Cognetti said. “By prioritizing fire stations in high traffic areas, we can help first responders reach emergencies safely, and faster, while simultaneously protecting residents traveling throughout the City.”

According to the project narrative, the Fire Station Warning Light Safety Improvement Project “involves the installation and upgrading of the fire station warning lights at fire stations located on busy streets.” Such warning lights serve as a signal that emergency vehicles are exiting or returning to their stations and help reduce the risk of collisions with non-emergency vehicles.

If awarded, the nearly $270,000 grant will support updated signals at the following fire stations:

  • Fire Headquarters, 518 Mulberry St.;
  • Station No. 2, 500 Gibbons St., with warning lights located on Pittston Ave.;
  • Station No. 4, 1047 N. Main Ave.;
  • Station No. 6, 940 Wyoming Ave.;
  • Station No. 7, 1917 Luzerne St.; and
  • Station No. 8, 205-207 W. Market St.

The stations identified in the grant narrative regularly experience high traffic and pedestrian activity. “Firetrucks exiting these facilities must merge directly into moving traffic, creating potential safety conflicts, specifically during emergency response situations when timing is critical.”

If the City receives the MTF grant, there would be no anticipated cost to Scranton for matching funds.
