SCRANTON, PA. – Beginning Monday, February 3, 2025, and continuing into the summer of 2026, a section of Elm Street that connects West Scranton and South Scranton will be closed for a long-planned bridge replacement project. Residents and drivers are advised of an approximately 1.2-mile detour via South Washington Avenue, Hickory Street, and Broadway Street and 4th Avenue.
While the bridge is replaced, a temporary pedestrian bridge will maintain some access between West and South Scranton. A parking lot on Elm Street commonly used to access the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail will be closed.
Vehicle traffic will be redirected around the area of the South Side Sports Complex. From South Washington Avenue, drivers will turn left onto Hickory Street and Broadway Street and left again onto 4th Avenue towards Luzerne Street and Elm Street. From Elm Street, drivers will travel one way down 3rd Avenue towards Broadway Street and out to South Washington Avenue.
According to information from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Elm Street Bridge Replacement is one in a package of four bridge replacements that comprise the Scranton Local Bridge Project. Other bridge replacements included in the project are the West Lackawanna Avenue Bridge, the North Main Avenue Bridge, and the Parker Street Bridge which closed in March 2024, reopened temporarily last week, and is due to be completed this spring.
