March 19, 2025

It is with profound sadness that the Scranton Fire Department announces the passing of Lieutenant Kelly Hopkins after a courageous battle with cancer. Lt. Hopkins passed away peacefully on Sunday morning March 16, 2025.

The City of Scranton’s Fire Department is in the process of finalizing the coordination for funeral services that are scheduled for later this week. Visitation will be held for Lt. Hopkins on Thursday March 20, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home located at 262 Railroad Avenue, Scranton.

The Scranton Police Department will be assisting with traffic control in this area due to the expected number of community members paying their respects to the family along with the current traffic
congestion in this area due to the Elm Street bridge detour routes. Residents and commuters are
encouraged to take alternative routes during this time.

The memorial mass for Lt. Hopkins will be held at Cathedral of Saint Peter, 315 Wyoming Avenue Scranton, on Friday March 21, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. The 300 block of Wyoming Avenue will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until approximately 12:00 p.m. for the memorial mass. The 300 block of Linden Street will also have travel impacts with potential partial closures of the lanes near the Cathedral.
