South Scranton park rehabilitation project will bring $1.1 million in improvements
SCRANTON, PA. – The City of Scranton is proposing an engineering and design contract with Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., (GPI) of Moosic, for up to $105,590 to begin planning for $1.1 million in renovations at Connell Park, 800 Gibbons St., Scranton.
“Our investment into our parks continues, and we are excited about the potential Connell Park holds through our planned renovation project,” Scranton Mayor Paige G. Cognetti said. “As we prepare to reopen the Connell Park pool this summer, we’re updating features that will make this a multigenerational attraction in South Scranton.”
The Connell Park rehabilitation project is funded in part by a $381,594 grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) program and a $149,400 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Community Conservation Partnerships Program (C2P2). The City will match the total $530,994 in grant awards with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
The project will improve multiple pieces of Connell Park, a nearly 16-acre park that is currently home to Scranton’s only dog park. Improvements will include a new wellness loop trail, biking and hiking trails, a new playground, upgrades to the dog park, and various accessibility improvements. Connell Park pool renovations, which were funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), continue in preparation for this summer.
The contract with GPI was introduced before Scranton City Council by a unanimous vote at their March 4, 2025, meeting.
