The storm event on Saturday, September 9 caused significant flooding in parts of the City of Scranton. We have requested information from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, but in the meantime and out of an abundance of caution we want to remind residents who have been in flood waters or working in muddy conditions to check for open wounds. Rinse and clean any wounds with fresh, clean water and seek medical attention if wounds are red, swollen, or you have a fever. Antibiotics may be necessary to clear infection.
On Friday, September 15, the City of Scranton is hosting a Storm Recovery Outreach Event at Holy Rosary Center (302 W. Market Street) from 10am-2pm. There will be a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) on site to perform skin checks and potentially recommend further medical assessment. There will be Tetanus Diphtheria and Pertussis (TDaP) shots available as well, which may prevent infection in future exposures.
“This has been a traumatizing event for many of our residents and business owners and their families and friends,” said Mayor Cognetti. “We appreciate the community spirit and care that everyone is showing one another to get through this time and urge everyone to be mindful of their health and that of others.”
