SCRANTON, PA. – Mayor Paige G. Cognetti was joined by members of Scranton City Council, the Pennsylvania legislature, and the Scranton Municipal Recreation Authority on Wed., Oct. 22, to winterize the new Nay Aug Park pool, 500 Arthur Ave., Scranton, for the very first time. A grand opening is planned for next summer.
“We are ready for children and families to enjoy this investment in Nay Aug Park next year,” Mayor Cognetti said. “We appreciate the City Council members and state representatives who have helped us restore this important piece of our largest park, and we appreciate the hard work of the design and construction professionals who have gotten us to this point. We are excited to keep raising funds for Phase II and delighted to see the surface work coming together for the multipurpose courts in this same footprint.”
“I am extremely happy and proud to have been part of the replacement pool complex at Nay Aug Park,” Scranton City Council President Gerald Smurl said. “I am excited to see Phase I come to completion. Hopefully we can start Phase II of the project the splash pad and lap pool next summer. The underground infrastructure has already been installed for the second phase. It’s exciting to be able to add this project to our list of pools, parks, and playgrounds that have been replaced throughout our entire city. We have begun the Capouse Avenue splash pad and playground with more to follow.”
Phase I of the Nay Aug Park pool project cost a total of $4,567,741, made possible through a combination of $3 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, a $1 million Local Share Account statewide grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and City funds. The pool complex currently includes a zero-entry swimming pool with an industrial slide, water play features, and other site improvements.
Earlier this month, City Council approved legislation from Mayor Cognetti’s office to apply for a $2,007,938 Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant for Phase II of the project. With an estimated cost of more than $4 million, Phase II would develop a planned lap pool and a detached splash pad to complement the zero-entry pool.
When it opens next year, the pool at Nay Aug will be third outdoor pool rebuilt or restored during Mayor Cognetti’s administration. The rehabilitated Connell Park pool, 800 Gibbons St., and a brand-new pool facility at Weston Field, 982 Providence Rd., both reopened in June 2025.
Scranton also offers a splash pad at Novembrino Park, 200 10th Ave., with construction underway on a second splash pad at Capouse Avenue Park, 1300 Capouse Ave. Other pool facilities include the outdoor pool at Weston Park, 100 Spring St., and an indoor pool at Weston Field.
